A DC high voltage generator is a test device that produces DC high voltage. It is mainly used to study the insulation strength of DC transmission and converter station equipment and insulating materials under DC high voltage, the corona and ion flow of DC transmission lines and their effects, as well as to conduct leakage current tests on AC and DC power equipment. Some AC equipment with large capacitance, such as power cables and cables, often use DC high voltage generators for insulation tests to reduce the capacity requirements of the test equipment. DC high voltage generators can also serve as power sources for other high-voltage test equipment such as impulse voltage generators, impulse current generators, and oscillating circuits (see oscillating circuit test station). They are also widely used in other scientific and technological fields.
In high-voltage laboratories, DC high voltage is usually generated by rectifying AC high voltage. The rectifier circuits mainly include simple rectifier circuits and cascade rectifier circuits. Their basic requirements are: ① The ripple factor of the output voltage should not be greater than 3%; ② Once the test object flashes over, the power supply should be able to maintain the arc so that it does not extinguish. The characteristics of a DC high voltage generator are represented by the rated DC current (average value) Id, the corresponding output voltage (average value) Ud, and the voltage ripple factor S. S=(Umax-Umin)%/(2Ud), where Umax and Umin are the maximum and minimum values of the output voltage, respectively.
